Dr. Katy Swalwell, Keynote Speaker
Katy Swalwell, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of Social & Cultural Studies in the School of Education at Iowa State University. A former middle and high school social studies teacher, she has worked in Elementary Education programs as a teacher educator for over ten years. Her research focuses on how the disciplines of social studies can help to develop young people's and teachers' critical consciousness. She is the author of several books including Educating Activist Allies: Social Justice Pedagogy with the Suburban and Urban Elite and the forthcoming To Build A Better World: Anti-Oppressive Social Studies Young Learners with Dr. Noreen Naseem Rodríguez and Becoming A Threat to Educational Inequity with Dr. Paul Gorski. She also has worked with RAYGUN and Iowan artists to publish children's books through the Amazing Iowa series, including Amazing Iowa Women and Amazing Iowa Athletes. In addition to her research and university teaching, Dr. Swalwell works with teachers throughout the U.S. to develop anti-oppressive social studies curriculum.
